Strong and vulnerable – women experiencing displacement and ‘Textile Memories’ by Varvara Keidan Shavrova

Sonntag, 09. März 2025, 11:30 – 15:30, Berlin

Half of all people who have had to flee or have been expelled are women and girls. They are often exposed to gender-specific violence and dangers: structural discrimination and sexual abuse are not only reasons for fleeing, but also a reality on the escape route and after arrival or in the camp. At the same time, they are the ones who take care of the children and the family under the most difficult conditions. In an exceptional situation, women and girls in particular bear great responsibility and need resilience and courage.

In the tour, we address the specific challenges and look at testimonies that tell of experiences then and now. We also visit the gallery exhibition ‘Textile Memories’ by the Russian-born artist Varvara Keidan Shavrova, who lives in England and Ireland. She has printed a series of felt blankets with memories from her family album. Three textiles from the Documentation Centre's collection have been added to this installation. The overall ensemble represents the deeply human desire to connect with something warm, familiar and familiar, and to counteract the painful feeling of loss of home, loneliness and uprooting.
