Gallery exhibition opening: Rushnyk - The Disasters of War
Gallery exhibition opening
This series of red and white textiles transforms etchings by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya from the time of the Napoleonic Wars into traditional Ukrainian embroidered cloths, so-called 'rushnyky'. The cross-stitching on the one hand seems to distort Goya's motifs while at the same time dissolving the uniform structure of the patterns. What is the background and what is the foreground? One could ask: What is history and what is the present?
We see moving and tragic symbols of the return of war and displacement. Women who fled from Ukraine to Germany were involved in the realization.
