Schools and Teachers
Multi-perspective and methodically varied offers for school classes deal with the topic of forced migration in a historical cross-section or longitudinal section and at the same time tie in with today's living environments. Thematic workshops relate the topics of displacement and flight to overarching curricular learning areas such as migration, integration, identity, and culture of remembrance.

The compact workshop format combines a guided tour and a workshop and invites students to an in-depth and varied engagement with the themes of the permanent exhibition. In a joint tour, exploratory self-exploration, and creative group work, the students deal with basic concepts and causes of forced migration. Using different case studies (including the flight and expulsion of the Germans, civil war flight from the former Yugoslavia, expulsion of the Muslim Rohingya, current war flight from Ukraine), they work out what the experience of flight and expulsion means for those affected. With activating impulses and discussion questions close to the present, the workshop ties in with today's life worlds and deals with universal questions of (forced) migration, integration and identity.
The exhibition workshop enables a more intensive and multifaceted exchange than the 90-minute "guided tour plus". Compared to the four-hour workshops, it is more compact in terms of time and less focused on independent small group work.
Target group: Secondary level I and II
Duration: 4 hours (incl. break)

What causes people to flee or to be displaced? How does inequality arise and how does exclusion work? And how can integration and diversity succeed? In a historical longitudinal section, the workshop illuminates causes of forced migration and asks which structures and patterns lead to flight and displacement. Using the categories "clothing", "religion", "language" and "identity", all of which are dealt with using different case studies from the 20th century, the students deal with concepts and categories such as "nation", "majority and minority" and "enemy images". (Non-)belonging and (foreign) attributions are examined both as a cause of forced migration and as its consequence. On the basis of these universal aspects, the students sharpen their view of social challenges and current debates, such as refugee policy, nationalism or integration.

As a result of the Second World War, millions of people in Europe were forced to flee or were displaced. This includes 14 million Germans who lost their homes in the former eastern provinces of the German Reich and the settlement areas in East-Central and Southeast Europe. The workshop places this central chapter of contemporary German history in the context of National Socialist ideology, occupation and extermination policies. Causes will be examined in a differentiated way and different perspectives of the Allied Great Powers as well as Poland and Czechoslovakia will be considered. The historical-political dimension is illustrated by personal stories as well as biographies of the actors and those affected. Another focus is on the integration of displaced persons in the two German post-war societies after 1945 as well as personal and public memories of flight and expulsion. Methodically, the students work independently with objects, documents, eyewitness interviews and media of the exhibition and learn to view and question them from multiple perspectives.
